After open heart surgery the chest bones (sternum) often have continued motion and can be painful, especially with deep breathing, coughing and/or exertion. Now no scar can be completely removed, however their appearance
can be improved upon, which allows them to be less obvious. This
can be achieved through the application of certain medications,
or through scar revision surgery.
Various techniques are used for scar revision surgery such as Z-plasty
or W-plasty. Z-plasty is a surgical technique used to reposition
a scar so that it more closely conforms to the natural lines and
creases of the skin, where it will be less noticeable. It can also
relieve the tension caused by contracture.
